A Camping we will Go!

Last year my husband and I felt like something was missing and after some thought we decided it was fresh air, nature, back to basics and all the things we enjoyed while camping. We had a small hybrid tent trailer when the kids were small and have the most wonderful memories exploring caves, catching frogs, kayaking, hiking and all the other good things that come with adventure. When the kids were about to hit their teens we had a few larger trips planned that would not really let us utilize the trailer that much and we figured by the time we were ready to camp again the kids might have summer jobs and all the like. We ended up selling the trailer to avoid storage costs and tried some other adventures.

Last year after the revelation that we missed it, we decided even though the kids are mostly out of the nest, we would buy almost the identical camper to what we had and head out just the two of us. We keep working out a few kinks, but overall we are so happy to be back camping, we do love it. The camper gives you all the amenities you feel you need to not be roughing it too bad and yet we really can still enjoy nature. We have beds that are up off the ground and do not deflate on us. We have inside access to a toilet in the middle of the night for this lady who pees at least twice it seems. We have a fridge, so I do not have to deal with melting bags of ice in a cooler. Those are my top 3 LOVE my camper reasons. I do have to say having a microwave has come in handy a few times to heat up leftovers or water and not have to turn on a stove. Also this past weekend we used the air conditioner in there, as it was soooooo HOT! Felt like +41 the day we were packing up - yikes! We would cool off with a swim before bed and then cool off the camper and slept with no covers.

A little journal book was started years ago to take notes about the different campgrounds we visited and what we liked about each so we could remember. So far this year we have been to Silver Lake and Charleston Lake. We live in Ottawa and both of these are easy drives to get to and only an hour or two away. I have to say we enjoyed both campgrounds immensely. Silver Lake had 2 cute little beaches and a fun walkway where we caught frogs. We had easy access to the beach and could even see it from our site. They had excellent Park staff, it was kept very quiet and clean. Charleston Lake was not quite as clean, but we did see staff driving through. A raccoon visited us one night and licked out our grease trap from our Blackstone Grill funny enough. We only figured it out when the neighbours told us he made a mess at their site and we saw black drip marks on a few of the nearby dishes. Charleston Lake had a nice Discovery Center if you like animal facts and some cool hikes with overhangs, rooted trees and rocky climbs.

Our next trip is to the Glengarry Highland Games. We won't have a nice site there; we will just be parked in a field with easy access to the games, so we will see how well our battery does and we will pray it is not too hot.
