A GLIMMER to Make Your Day

I saw an Instagram post yesterday (@The Danish Way) that has stuck in my mind and it was about triggers and glimmers. So a trigger would be something that causes us to feel a moment of negativity, upset, anger, etc. It could be tiny, like your child did not empty their lunch bag (again) or it could be larger and trigger something very painful that happened in your past. I have worked very hard over the years to minimize as many triggers in our lives as I can. Every small problem we have had in the house that is annoying, I try to find a solution so that it no longer pisses me off. For example, we have chargers for our phones built into our new end tables, so when we are resting at night and phones are almost dead, we don't have to get up to charge them. Such a simple thing, but it makes me so much happier. It took away that moment from almost every evening, where you were like damn, sighed and had to decide to get up off the couch to go charge your phone somewhere or live with a dead phone. Other examples, putting a recycling bin right beside the door to the garage so I do not have to put shoes on to go in the garage to toss an egg carton or juice container. Putting those toothpick bristle brushes right by where I eat, so I can get the chia seeds out of my teeth right away. Like I said, all small things, but each solved an annoying problem which triggered a tiny moment of annoyance or frustration. Each of those small moments adds up to how you feel in the course of your day. I may have eliminated a dozen or more small moments where I sigh, roll my eyes or avoid what I have to do each day - awesome for your overall mood and spirit, I would say. What little problem could you solve today with just a quick fix?

Now if we go opposite, we have what they called a glimmer. I love me a good glimmer! A lot of glimmers are similar for some people: a beautiful scent, happy music, seeing someone laugh, that first taste of coffee... but for everyone those glimmers would be unique, not only to their own personality and tastes, but also their childhood memories. For me, many of my glimmers bring back fond memories from childhood. Last week I had a glimmer that caught me by surprise when I took our van into the shop. It is the smell of the shop itself, that good old smell of mechanics working in the shop reminded me of when I was a kid and would visit Fleet Maintenance which was the garage my Grampa owned and my Uncle Al worked at. We would visit there almost every time we went to Regina and now I love catching a whiff of

On my bedroom dresser: I have gems, my Lemon Meringue figure, keychain from Devin that says I am #1 mom, little spell bottles from Jasmine, candles

that smell. Some of my every day glimmers that I have are 3 candles in my room that, even when not lit, I can simply pick up and smell that make me feel calm. My gems are another glimmer. They remind me of my family, both my dad and Uncle Dan, as they wrote us 3 girls a story many years ago and each of the daughters were given a stone that my dad thought best represented us and our spiritual needs at the time. Since then, my daughter, Jasmine, has also gotten into witchcraft and so we visit many "witchy" stores as I call them and in every one I purchase one small gem that calls to me at that moment. Now I have small collection that bring me harmony and when I need a pick me up, I can hold one close to my heart to help me feel loved, calm or give me energy.

And of course, if you know me, you know I have some weird glimmers, too.... like in the spring, I have 2 fuzzy Care Bears sitting in my Urban Barn wagon - lol! As soon as I saw them, I had to have them! Cheer Bear and Good Luck Bear were the two I remember having as a kid. I am not sure if we couldn't find or afford the real ones at the time, but my mom made ours. They looked just like these 2 you can buy on Etsy I also have a retro Lemon Meringue figure, that at this point almost has no face that was gifted to me by my niece. She took it out of a geo-cache and I practically stole it from her, I wanted it so bad. (seriously, it was bad, she was like 5 and I literally was stealing it out of her hands.) A few years later, she sent, or her mom my sister Deanna, sent it to me as my Christmas gift - best present ever! It even stilled smelled like it used to in the 80's. These glimmers make me feel so nostalgic and loved, like I remember that feeling from growing up. Amazing that a simple figurine can do that. Find those small glimmers in your life and find a way to make them happen more often.

I figure if we have more glimmers everyday than triggers, our overall mood and spirit will be better off. Tell me what makes your heart glimmer in the comments.

My favourite glimmer is looking at the pictures from our holiday in October, hanging on the wall behind my laptop so see them every day! Warms my heart!

Ba, ha, I know who wrote this one - Hi, mom! Yes, that is even more than a glimmer for me, just a huge hug for my heart when I think of that special trip.

What a lovely post. It made me think of some glitches I've fixed over the past few months. Like using a wonderful New-to-me vacuum that has a bag so I don't have to spend 20 minutes after vacuuming to clean it out. Now I don't mind cleaning floors around here. The same trick with my cell phone - charging it at night beside my bed. And filling my annoying CPAP machine with fresh water well before bedtime when it seems to take superhuman effort to not crawl into bed right away so I can fill it up. sigh... love the machine but that minute is miserable. lol

Glimmers! I live for glimmers and try to gift myself small joys througho…

How powerful a smell can be - it is amazing, it can take you right back to those times and make you feel all the warm fuzzies. And glad you treated yourself to a new vacuum - that must make a big difference.
